The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework provides a structured approach to the education of young children, from birth to the age of five. This period is important in laying the foundation for a child’s future learning and development. The key principles of the EYFS framework:
The EYFS framework is based on four key principles: A Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments, and Learning and Development. Each principle works together to create an inclusive, child-centered approach to early education.
A unique child: Recognizing that every child is different and has their own needs, interests, and abilities. The framework promotes inclusive education, ensuring that children are supported in ways that best suit their individual learning styles.
Positive relationships: Establishing secure, trusting relationships between children and caregivers is essential for emotional and social development. Through these relationships, children develop self-confidence and the ability to interact with others.
Enabling environments: The environment should provide opportunities for children to explore, experiment, and learn. This includes both physical spaces and the social environment, where children feel safe, respected, and encouraged to engage with the people around them.
Learning and development: This principle focuses on the importance of learning through play and structured activities that encourage cognitive, emotional, and physical growth. The framework focuses on that children learn best when they are active participants in their learning process.
Areas of learning and development:
The EYFS framework divides learning into seven areas, which are further categorised into two groups. The first three areas are called prime areas, which form the foundation for all other learning:
- Communication and language: Developing listening, speaking, and understanding skills.
- Physical development: Encouraging children to develop both fine and gross motor skills.
- Personal, social, and emotional development: Nurturing confidence, self-awareness, and social skills.
The remaining four areas are called specific areas and build on the prime areas:

- Expressive arts and design: Encouraging creativity through music, movement, art, and role play.
